Hello, world. Today is Thursday, and it’s sunny, and we’re up early because Shawshank needs to do a work thing this morning. I’ve been awake, off and on, since around 5am. My alarm was set for 6:30am, but we didn’t make it to that point. Chaucer was yelling for breakfast. Since Pippin busted the blinds in the kitchen, half the Flat is in full sunlight every morning. And since sunrise is something like 4:30am, Chaucer wakes up and sings the song of his people for a couple of hours before we get up.
Yesterday was a better day. The kimono of many colors is still unfinished. I was determined to have a good crafting day, so I didn’t make anything harder than it had to be, and didn’t fixate on problems. I’m working on joining the kimono’s side seams, which means piecing together the zigzagging squares of fabric. I’ve made things way more fucking difficult than they needed to be. If I’d made the initial strips longer in the first place, the whole things may have been more unwieldy to work at times, but I definitely wouldn’t be in the current mess. I pinned one side together, then made plans to sit and hand sew that shit after dinner. Hand sewing everything has two benefits:
- It offers a bit more structure (compared to just pinning it) when it comes to running it through the sewing machine
- If I fuck it up, it’s looooooooads easier to rip out hand stitching than the machine stitches.
And, since the sun was out and it was actually warm outside, I was able to go outside and play for a little while.
Surprisingly, sewing shit by hand didn’t take as long as I thought it might. I only pinned and sewed one side yesterday. In my head, there was no sense in working on both sides if I didn’t know for certain I was doing it right. Plus, I didn’t want to add more pins to the dozens already in the pile of fabric. Once I sew up the second side, I’m going to run both side seams through the machine for extra strength.
I think today might be more of the same, bullshit: pinning up the other side of the kimono, sewing it by hand later tonight, playing with toys in the afternoon. I might make some pants, but I might not. All of the sheets I picked up over the weekend have patterns that repeats down their length. This means the easier of the two pants patterns would leave the motif running weird. While one of the three sheets would be fine, I’m holding off converting the dinosaur and Disney princess sheets. I know having those designs wonky would drive me absolutely batty. I can get the other pattern from Shawshank‘s mom this weekend.
Regardless of what I do, I’ll probably be half naked while I do it, because that’s how I roll.
