I spoke to his probation officer. She didn’t have any information on his case. In fact, she was annoyed that she didn’t get anything more than a courtesy call from ICE. Unfortunately, her last experience with ICE was about 10 years ago, and things have changed a lot over that time.
After about three minutes of her being just as confused as I am about this whole business, she stopped me for a second. “Wait. How are you doing through this?”
I don’t know. No one’s ever asked me that before.
In the end, I could give the same answers I give my patients when we do the traditional small talk at the register, the “I’m good, and you?” we exchange, but never really care about. “Well, I’m here,” and “living the dream.”
But right now it’s simply “existing”.
