The Star Wars Hump

The Star Wars Hump

Good morning, world. Happy Wednesday. We have another typical Florida panhandle day. Sunshine, frogs, truck balls, diminishing human rights, lizards, the usual.

The cable guy never showed up yesterday. Mom was, in my opinion, unreasonably upset about it. First of all, we had no plans, so staying at home for a two hour block of time wasn’t a problem. Second, we have cable service. This isn’t a new installation, or anything. Literally nothing about her day was any different than any other day. She was being ridiculous.

Consider the following:

  • we hadn’t lost anything
  • we’re not missing out on anything
  • we weren’t inconvenienced

There was absolutely no reason for Mom to be as upset as she was.

She spent an hour stewing about it after the “service block” timeframe had passed. She couldn’t find a phone number to AT&T/DirecTV. I’m not sure what her reasoning behind that statement was because it’s FUCKING AT&T. Eventually, she called the number on some of her DirecTV paperwork from their original installation. At that point, Mom became every patient I ever made fun of, yelling at the automated phone menu. I suggested “just say ‘representative'”.

“GET ME A REPRESENTATIVE ON THE PHONE” she shouted at her phone. Twice, because the system wants to keep her in the automated side of things.

I told her to cut the shit (in a more polite manner), and she told me it makes her feel better.

“Well, please stop”, I said. “It makes me anxious and only seems to make you angrier when the machine doesn’t understand what you want.”

Naturally, she got snarky with the phone rep as well. Bless that rep’s heart because I heard Mom say something like “I’m sorry, I understand it’s not your fault, but…” Even Brian was shocked about how upset she was about things.

Both of my nephews had some medical procedures yesterday. I’m trying to consider how stressed Mom may have felt. Thankfully, nothing major for either kiddo, both were typical childhood operations. Everyone’s fine.

I went outside and spun a bit. The afternoon spin time wasn’t bad, just warm. I stayed out long enough to get sweaty, then went back inside. I had planned to paint in the afternoon, while the cable guy was here, but that never happened. If the wind stays light enough, I could go out today. I kind of just want to sketch.

But…

It’s Star Wars day, and another part of me wants to make an improvised Slave Leia cosplay out of beach towels, belts, and a tin foil covered bra.
