In the Dark

“So you can’t do anything except just wait?” asked StressedRph.

That’s what it amounts to right now. The probation officer had as much, if not less information than I already have. She did the same thing I did, and looked him up on the ICE detainee locator. It lists him in custody, but not where he is. I promised to update her if I learn anything about his case. She’s afraid if it goes on too long, she’ll be forced to mark him as violating his probation terms. If that happens, he’s flagged and a warrant is issued for his arrest. As though it was any consolation, she’d flag it as one that doesn’t end with him being dragged out of the car or house again. He could just walk into the police station and surrender.

Surrender.

Then he’d be back at square one again, having to go before a judge and get bailed out.

Last night, I tried to add funds to his phone account at the facility. The payment portal has lookup option to get his inmate ID. It can find him and supplies me with an inmate number. However, it tells me the number is invalid when I try to use it. I tried again today and had the same problem. Tonight, I called the hotline for the office of immigration review. That system told me there’s no case found for him.

My other project is getting in touch with lawyers. Unfortunately, there’s only three in my “network” and area that deal with immigration law. I had called over the weekend, and left voicemails. Since I haven’t heard back from any of them, I’ve emailed them. I’ll use my lunch break tomorrow to reach out again by phone. I’ve also emailed an immigration law clinic run by one of the local law schools. I’m not sure if they can help, but it’s worth a shot.

I talked with Mom tonight. She’s like me, she needs to bounce ideas off someone not directly involved, or just talk. She called her brother, who had me stay with him after the raid so I wasn’t alone. My uncle told her he was afraid to say it, but the video conference seemed like it was probably an arraignment. Of course that’s what it is, it’s immigration court. It’s not an arraignment for his criminal conviction, but rather to determine if he can keep his permanent resident status.

I’m calling the jail tomorrow. Hopefully I get some info on what I’m dealing with in terms of getting in to visit again, and adding funds to his account.

But tonight, I’m taking a hot shower.

And yes, I’m eating.
