Controlled Knots

Not a bad day, all things considered. StressedRPh wasn’t a total twunt, although she had her moments. While I didn’t manage to fit in a workout, I was able to take out several storage box-type things, two boxes of dishes, a big contractor bag of trash, and two fans. I’ve come to the conclusion, while I’d really like to sell things, or at least donate them, I can’t have it all sitting around the house. I just can’t. For my own sanity, I need to get things out of the house.

Instead of the workout, I had a good chat with an old friend. I had an excellent dinner involving a lot of Brussels sprouts, and then I went outside for a little while. I’ve been practicing a move the flow arts world calls “air wraps”, but what I call “black magic fuckery”.

This isn’t a great angle to show the move, but it’s a cool trick to watch.

They’re not great – YET. I still need a lot of work on them. With poi, it’s not so much doing everything in the right order as it is knowing exactly how your poi move and manipulating them. There is a rhythm to them, and you need to learn it and make it work with your own rhythm.

Shawshank can do exactly one move with his poi, and that’s turning 180°. He’s so stiff when he does it that it looks almost painful. He once commented on my spinning: “You’re going by feeling, aren’t you?” That’s exactly what it is. Doing the same thing over and over again, and you get a feel for exactly where that sweet spot is to flip your wrist or turn your body. Wraps, so far, are no different. There’s a sweet spot where the pois’ leashes cross, and when and how to move your hands so they bend across and pop back out again. The trick is finding it.

Tomorrow is Wednesday. It’s another shift with Whatshisface, and we’re not happy about it. I actually told a patient today that while her problem could be resolved tomorrow afternoon, she shouldn’t come back until Friday when StressedRPh is back in.

I think I’m going to have grilled cheese tomorrow.
