Fuuuu.

Two or three weeks ago I texted Shawshank.

Email the law office handling the closing and make sure they understand you're not here and find out if there's anything you should be doing

I wanted to make sure there was a good head start on anything that might need to be done and mailed. TinyTown is in the middle of nowhere. There is no such thing as express mail. The office told him they could do most things electronically, and they’d set him up with whatever paperwork he needed to actually sign.

Friday afternoon rolls around, and the law office emails us. They can send him the paperwork via email and he can print it out, or they can overnight it him. Go to the embassy, sign it, and mail it back ASAP.

GO TO THE EMBASSY.

WTF. Do these people have any idea what that entails? The closest embassy is in Manitoba, and that’s like six hours away. Ok, not ideal, but it could be worse, right?

It is worse. The Manitoba embassy can’t do what we need. Instead, the closest embassy Shawshank could use is Calgary, which is roughly 10-11 hours drive. That’s definitely an overnight stay. You can’t just walk in and ask for things to be notarized, you need to schedule an appointment. But their online appointment system is offline, redirecting people to an email address.

But the hits keep coming.

Then, we thought about the possibility of giving me power of attorney. It was something we had considered before, but they said they’d send us everything we needed. Could we do it? Sure, he could have the notary in TinyTown sign off on a form. But do you know what the next step is?

GO TO THE EMBASSY.

This would have been nice to know with a little more than a single week of prep time.

On the plus side, I could probably go to the law office, sign all my paperwork, and then leave pretty much as soon as I could empty the place.
