Hey, look at this.

Hey, look at this.

Yo. It’s Sunday. The sun is out, the skies are clear, and I might get to enjoy some outside time. Bring on the coffee.

The Saturday shopping tradition continued yesterday. We went to Walmart, as usual. It’s taken me a year to do so, but I grabbed my own basket and went off on my own for half the trip. I had a small list of things I needed to pick up. Only two of those items were food. I picked up another storage container to convert into a terrarium. This time around, I went with plastic.

DAMN IT WOMAN, NO MORE JARS.

The first photo is the jar collection as of yesterday morning. The smallest container, on the far right, was the original container the springtails came in. I still had a small amount of substrate in there, and a small critter colony. I didn’t want to leave them in an undersized dish, and had planned to make something small if I didn’t divvy the residents up among the other four jars. When we left for the store yesterday, I noticed a lot of moss growing along the bottom edge of the house, and decided to make a “moss-arium”.

I added some plants, what I have in the other jars: ferns, pennywort, and some of Mom‘s variegated ivy. The resulting container is a pretty accurate recreation of the front yard: a stick, some moss, and leaf litter. Then all the remaining springtails were dumped in. We’ll see how they fare inside. The moss likes things a bit wetter, and I’ll probably add a little bit more water to it later today.

My little microscope came in yesterday. At the last minute, I remembered to buy an adapter so its USB plug could be used with my phone. This proved pointless. For one thing, I couldn’t find a USB to USB-C adapter. I knew the microscope’s USB converted to a micro-USB plug, and was able to find one of those instead, and figured I was good. However, the microscope came with the proper adapter, and I’m only out $2 for what I picked up in Walmart.

Folsomia candida, but you can call him Tinkerbell.

Unfortunately, the included adapter is just a wee bit too wide. If I want to record on my phone, I need to remove its case, otherwise the plug won’t fit. On the bright side, the included adapter plugs into my Chromebook without any trouble. In fact, I’m pretty sure I could video chat with Shawshank and stream from the microscope.

Think about it. TerraTV.

I don’t think it should come to anyone’s surprise that I spent several hours playing with it when the Amazon box showed up yesterday after lunch.
